Dear BMW Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic also Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
BMW AG has decided that a defect that relates to motor automobile safety exist in certain 2001 Model Year M3 vehicles. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle.
DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT
The potential defect involves the attachment of the parking brake cable to the rear brake backing plate on each side of your car. The two screws that secure the cable mounting bracket to the backing plate were tightened with less than the specified torque during automobile production.
As a result, the screws could loosen also eventually fall into the parking brake drum. If this were to happen, the parking brake could no longer be applied on that side of the vehicle. The loose screws would too generate noise in the drum.
It would too be possible in some cases for a screw to lodge in the parking brake drum, impairing the free movement of the drum. This would too produce noise, also in the extreme case, could cause the parking brake on that side to lock up while driving. In such a case, depending on the traffic conditions also the driver's reaction, a crash could occur.
PRECAUTIONS 1.CONTACT YOUR AUTHORIZED BMW CENTER IMMEDIATELY TO ARRANGE TO HAVE THE NECESSARY REPAIR PERFORMED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
2.If you hear a metallic noise, such as scraping, rattling, grinding, etc., from the rear brake area while driving, do not continue to drive. Pull off the road to a safe location. Contact BMW Roadside Assistance at 1-800-332-4269 immediately to have your automobile brought to the nearest BMW center.
3.If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise every different drivers of this important information.
DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR
The parking brake cable attaching screws will be replaced also secured with the proper torque.
This work will take approximately two hours also will be performed free of charge by your Authorized BMW center. Additional time may be required depending on the center's scheduling also processing. Call your Authorized BMW Center for an appointment.
