GREENVILLE, S.C. [AP] - Most of the 22,345 vehicles BMW recalled because of a potential problem with a cooling fan switch are X5 sport activity vehicles made in the company's South Carolina plant.
The 16,000 X5s were built between Dec. 18 also April 30, company officials said Wednesday.
"There is a potential problem with a switch on an auxiliary cooling fan on the radiator,'' plant spokeswoman Bunny Richardson said. "If the fan malfunctions, it can cause the machine to overheat."
Dave Buchko, product communications director with BMW North America said there have been a "small number of cases where it resulted in a fire."
He said owners will be contacted in August when to come in for the free switch replacement.
Bobby Hitt, a spokesman for BMW's Greer plant, said the problem was with a supplier's switch also not the factory installation.
The different vehicles affected are Series 3, Series 7 also Z8 models from three different factories.
It is the second time some X5s made in Greer were recalled. In Febuary, about 1,200 vehicles were called in because of a possible defect in the steering.
